Opening Doors

September 2009

Greetings,

Welcome to the 2009-10 school year! As you settle into a new year, I'm excited to share some resources. You may recognize some of the materials, and other pieces may be brand-new, but they are all designed to help you help your students see that college is possible.

College Step-by-Step is a comprehensive set of free resources that can help you reach more students and show them how to both prepare and pay for college. At the heart of College Step-by-Step is The College Step-by-Step Counselor's Resource, your source for the most up-to-date information on key college access topics. It covers four steps—planning, preparing, applying, deciding on college—that simplify a daunting topic into a manageable plan so your students can understand how to get into college and succeed. The guide also shows you how to use a variety of our free resources at each step along the way.

You can also use our poster and door hanger to let your students know that you're there to help. You can even customize the poster by adding your room number.

New this year are two brochures that are designed to engage your students through the use of vivid colors and illustrations. They help your students understand that their next stop is college. The brochure for ninth and tenth graders offers tips on planning and preparing for college. The brochure for eleventh and twelfth graders helps students apply to college, make their final decision, and pay for college.

You can find more information about our fabulous resources by visiting mygreatlakes.org/collegestepbystep.

We appreciate the work you do to help change lives for the better and open the doors to higher education for countless students who may not have thought it was possible!

Until next time,
