Opening Doors

December 2007

Greetings,

This month, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Darlene Russell as Outreach Consultant in Wisconsin. Darlene joined our team in mid-November and has already started to strengthen our outreach efforts.

As part of the Outreach team, Darlene will help plan, develop, and implement department initiatives for students, their families, and college access counselors. She'll work with middle and high schools, community-based organizations, the faith community, pre-college programs, and post-secondary institutions.

A perfect fit for the team, Darlene brings a wealth of experience from Marquette University's Education Opportunity Program where she assisted first-generation and low-income students with personal and academic counseling that emphasized career management. As a federal TRIO program, this Marquette program was designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Darlene helped students find internships, create resumes and cover letters, and gain other skills to help them aim toward a career. Darlene also worked as a College Prep Instructor for three years, helping high school students plan for college and learn about financial aid.

I'm so happy to have Darlene on our team. Her commitment to outreach will surely inspire some great new initiatives. "I have a passion for working with youth and community organizations," Darlene says. "I enjoy learning the ins and outs so I'm equipped to be a resource for professionals, students, and organizations."

Having someone with Darlene's passion and enthusiasm will greatly benefit the entire Outreach team. I look forward to introducing her to you as we continue to open doors to higher education.

Until next time,

La Toya Sykes, Director
Outreach and Access Awareness
