Opening Doors

December 2005

Greetings,

While thinking about this month's article, I came across an interview with David Gelinas, the national chair for NASFAA. In it, he commented on how important it is to stay committed to the goals of increasing students' awareness and ensuring their access to higher education. I was struck by one of his comments in particular, that we need to "put boots on the ground" and to personally get involved with students and their families.

One way to achieve this goal is to help those who work with students every day, to make sure they have the tools to make the biggest impact they can. That's one of the reasons we've recently enhanced our website, mygreatlakes.org.

The website now includes separate portals for Financial Aid Professionals and College Access Counselors. As we enhance our offerings, we wanted to ensure you can efficiently find the resources we've developed and accumulated for you. I would encourage you to take a look at the College Access Counselors portal as it includes links to our newly created Financial Aid Night PowerPoint® Presentation (which includes detailed speaker notes for each slide), A Counselor's Guide to Financial Aid, our Student Success Guides, as well as other online resources. This section also provides information about events happening in your communities and news that affects all college access practioners. Through this redesign, the website provides quick and easy access to a wealth of information, available whenever you need it.

I'm sure you'll find these improvements to be an asset as you continue to open doors to education for students and their parents. Providing them with the information they need is crucial to making sure they understand the choices they have.

I encourage you to email me your feedback at outreachandaccess@glhec.org on our redesign, as well as college access events that we should add to the "Events in Your Community" page in our College Access Counselors portal.

Until next time, have a great month!
