Opening Doors

November 2005

Greetings,

Welcome to your source for the latest information about "what's happening" in the world of Outreach and Access Awareness at Great Lakes.

Financial Aid Night season is fast approaching, and students and parents need to get applications for college and financial aid ready. As the requests to host financial aid nights begin to pour in, you need not worry about firing up the old presentations and trying to remember how to plan this worthwhile event. Our latest addition to our Counselor's Toolkit will assist you!

We've created a Microsoft PowerPoint® Financial Aid Night presentation which covers the financial aid process from beginning to end, providing a great foundation for a financial aid night in clear, easy-to-understand language. The slides describe a wide range of topics, from a description of financial aid types, to tips for filling out the FAFSA, to an explanation of how financial aid is awarded. Other highlights of the presentation include:

  • Detailed Speaker Notes - use as a script as you present the information to students and parents, and as a way to brush up on the topics yourself.
  • A Preparation Checklist - walks you through the things you need to remember as you plan for your financial aid night.
  • Handouts that summarize the key topics covered in the presentation, allowing students and parents to continue to learn and think about financial aid even after they've left for the night.

This latest addition to our toolkit will save you some time and allow you to remain confident that you're providing accurate and helpful information to your students. Opening doors to education is a mutual goal, and I am confident that you will find our Counselor's Toolkit a resource that provides the information you need now! So go to mygreatlakes.org to view, print out, and/or order the materials you need.

I look forward to your feedback. Email me at outreachandaccess@glhec.org.

Till next time, have a great month!
