Opening Doors

October 2007

Greetings,

This month I'm pleased to tell you about a wonderful event occurring throughout Wisconsin - Money Smart Week! Great Lakes is partnering with numerous organizations to promote financial education across the state the week of Oct. 7.

Money Smart Week is a program started by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 2001 to promote financial literacy. Last year, Money Smart Week was held in Wisconsin for the first time and enjoyed tremendous success! More than 6,500 people, many under the age of 25, attended nearly 500 events statewide. The events focused on financial literacy topics related to saving and investing, debt management, financing college, and much more.

Once again, banks, financial institutions, non-profit organizations, and government agencies are partnering to provide a week of classes and events aimed at helping consumers make informed choices when managing their personal finances. Some of the organizations involved include the Governor's Council on Financial Literacy and the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions; First Lady of Wisconsin Jessica Doyle serves as honorary chair.

Great Lakes will sponsor events across the state during Money Smart Week. Our Training Consultants will provide several financial literacy presentations including Credit Smarts, Money Smarts, and ID Defense. We'll also present our Financial Aid 101 workshop to help families learn about financing their child's college education. If you would like more details about Great Lakes' Money Smart Week events, please contact me at lsykes@glhec.org.

Money Smart Week Wisconsin campaigns will be held in Appleton, Madison, Sheboygan, Milwaukee, and Manitowoc. I'm delighted to tell you that this year new campaigns will take place in Green Bay, Wausau, Fond du Lac, and West Bend. With support from the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, events will also occur in Eau Claire, La Crosse, and Spooner.

Financial literacy is an integral part of education. Building students' foundations gives them the skills they need to successfully manage their money for their entire lives. It's an important way to open doors to many bright, limitless futures.

Until next time,
