Opening Doors

September 2007

Greetings,

I'm so excited to tell you about the 2007-2008 version of the Counselor's Toolkit, which will be available Sept. 21!

As you may know, Great Lakes' Counselor's Toolkit is a collection of resources aimed at assisting college access and high school counselors as they help students and their families achieve their goals of higher education through financial aid. The toolkit includes the Counselor's Guide to Financial Aid, financial aid workshop materials complete with handouts and speaker notes, our collection of Student Success Guides, and much more!

We've done a lot to this new edition of the Counselor's Toolkit. We've updated the Counselor's Guide to Financial Aid with the latest information about federal loan programs. We've also added new sections about how students can begin the college preparation process as well as information to assist students with special circumstances – like those who are in foster care – as they apply for financial aid.

Because students need help from parents and adults with the college preparation process, we have created a new presentation called College Prep for Parents 101. This Microsoft PowerPoint® presentation comes complete with ready-to-use speaker notes that can also be customized if needed. To enhance comprehension, we've included handouts for the audience that detail the application and standardized test processes and give step-by-step details about creating an academic portfolio – everything they need to assist their college-bound children. To help the counselor presenting, we also include a promotional flyer to help get the word out and an evaluation form to solicit feedback on the workshop.

Also in our Counselor's Toolkit are the ever-useful Student Success Guides. We have flyers and brochures to help students and their families understand and prepare for college planning, financial aid, and financial literacy. For more information about the Counselor's Toolkit, please email me at lsykes@glhec.org or visit mygreatlakes.org and complete the online order form.

The toolkit helps counselors inform students on a variety of topics, including making the college decision and understanding options for financing it. I hope that having access to up-to-date and essential information helps open doors to higher education to those who might not have thought it was possible.

Until next time,

La Toya Sykes, Director
Outreach and Access Awareness
