Opening Doors

April 2009

Greetings,

Recently I presented to a group of college access professionals who were amazed to learn what a guaranty agency does. It prompted me to take this opportunity to explain some of the amazing things that we do here at Great Lakes.

I know that college is possible for anyone who is willing to work hard and commit themselves to a brighter future. At Great Lakes, we believe the organizations, communities, and professionals that invest in higher education today cultivate the success of tomorrow. As we weather today's tough economy, it's clear that an educated workforce is more important than ever. By dedicating ourselves to changing lives for the better through higher education, we reach out to millions of students and families by promoting and publicizing information for traditionally underrepresented populations on college planning, career preparation, and paying for college.

Our free resources are designed to address the most common barriers to college attendance: lack of awareness, lack of preparedness, and financial constraints. We promote awareness by:

  • Conducting workshops and supporting comprehensive websites on student financial aid and career planning like Mapping Your Future or Going2College.org that guide students and families through career and college preparation with interactive games and hands-on counseling tools
  • Publishing and distributing brochures about applying to college and paying for college
  • Participating in events that help families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Partnering with existing community-based organizations that offer outreach services to help them reach more students
  • Creating customized programs and materials on financial literacy to help students and families understand how to budget and manage finances

Great Lakes is proud of our efforts to help students pursue their college dreams. With your help and encouragement in promoting college access, we can open more doors to higher education for all students.

Until next time,

La Toya Sykes, Director
Outreach and Access Awareness
