Greetings,
The Outreach & Access Awareness team at Great Lakes is growing by leaps and bounds! I am pleased to welcome Seneca Herring to our team as Outreach Consultant. Based out of Cincinnati, Seneca will join Mike Clouse to serve our friends in Ohio.
I believe that Seneca's background will really make him an asset to our team. Seneca knows firsthand the importance of graduating from college to achieve your dreams. A first-generation student himself, he attended college on a full basketball scholarship. After an injury made his dreams of becoming the next Michael Jordan impossible, Seneca was thankful he had focused on his academics even more than his athletics. He graduated and began his successful career off the court.
Seneca worked for more than four years with Cincinnati City Council members, including time as a chief of staff, campaign manager, and then later as general consultant. Most recently, Seneca worked as a high school scholarship coordinator with Project GRAD Cincinnati. This non-profit organization aims to improve the success of urban school students to academically achieve, graduate from high school, and enter and complete a college education. For the past four years, Seneca was based out of Cincinnati Public High School and provided college access information, primarily to non-traditional and first-generation students. He has also worked with several community service organizations, including the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati, youth leadership organizations, and as a men's basketball coach at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.
From his time with Project GRAD Cincinnati, Seneca inspired many first-generation students as well as himself. For many first-generation students, aiming toward college is a goal in itself, and attending graduate school is usually not promoted. Yet Seneca practiced what he preached to these students, which makes him such an excellent role model, especially now as a graduate of Xavier University with his master's degree.
It's wonderful to have someone with Seneca's experience and enthusiasm on our team. He's truly an inspiration to follow your dreams, and I hope he'll help open doors to higher education for many, many students. Hearing his story will surely inspire many students to follow their higher education dreams.
Until next time,
