We have a new member on our growing team! I am pleased to announce the appointment of Hannah Chan as Senior Outreach Consultant to our Outreach and Access Awareness team at Great Lakes. Hannah will be based in Minnesota.
Hannah officially started with us on February 18, and she's already involved with our efforts to reach first-generation and low-income students and families. Many of her tasks will be related to planning, developing, and implementing outreach department initiatives to students and their families, college access counselors in middle and high schools, community-based organizations, the faith community, pre-college programs and post-secondary institutions. These initiatives focus on encouraging higher education, increasing access to college and financial aid, and educating students about the importance of managing their money.
Hannah is well versed in the needs of students trying to secure funds for college. She came to Great Lakes from the Minnesota Office of Higher Education where she worked with Get Ready/GEAR UP. Hannah's seven years with that agency helped her learn how to assist students, particularly those from low-income families. As a child of immigrant parents and the first person in her family to go to college, she knows first-hand about the challenges faced by this population. Hannah is on a mission to share her knowledge and experiences with students because she says her own choices may have been different if she had known more about financial aid when she was preparing for college.
"I'm excited to have the opportunity to work with kids — especially first-generation college-bound students," Hannah told me. "I'm looking forward to continuing to build partnerships with schools and college access programs in Minnesota."
I'm as excited as Hannah to have her join the Outreach team. Her experience, knowledge, and enthusiasm will be a terrific asset to our efforts toward opening doors to higher education.
