Greetings,
It always makes me happy when I have good news to share. And this month, I have some great news. After months of preparation and hard work, volunteers from all over the country came together in February to host College Goal Sunday.
In case you're unfamiliar with the event, College Goal Sunday is a free, nation-wide program geared toward assisting low-income and first-generation students and their families in the completion of the FAFSA application. Families arrive at designated sites with their financial information in hand, and volunteers, including financial aid professionals, are ready to walk them through filling out and submitting the FAFSA.
Great Lakes supports College Goal Sunday in a number of states. Our staff is committed to the cause and has volunteered in many of those states. I personally was able to help out at a school in Milwaukee, Wis. This was the first time that College Goal Sunday was ever held in the state, and we were able to help out hundreds of students. Being able to see the appreciation and relief on the faces of the students and parents who attended was truly overwhelming.
I can't emphasize enough how important events like College Goal Sunday are. Sometimes the biggest hurdle that students face is not knowing that financial aid is available, and how easy it can be to get money for college. By helping out at events that increase awareness among students and families, we can play a major role in helping students overcome those obstacles.
If you're interested in learning more about College Goal Sunday or other outreach events, let me know. You can email me at LSykes@glhec.org.
Together we can open doors to education to the students and families who need us the most.
Until next time, have a great month!
