Opening Doors

February 2007

Greetings,

Outreach and Access Awareness at Great Lakes has been very busy lately. Another successful College Goal Sunday has left us inspired to assist even more students with achieving their higher education goals, and we're lucky to have some additional help to do so.

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Clouse to the position of Outreach Consultant in Ohio. Mike is already working on planning, developing, and implementing outreach initiatives to students and their families; college access counselors in middle and high schools; community-based organizations; the faith community; pre-college programs; and post-secondary institutions. These initiatives focus on encouraging higher education, increasing access to college and financial aid, and educating students about the importance of managing their money.

Mike discovered his passion for working with students through his work in the admissions office at the University of Findlay in Ohio, where he began working after graduating in 1996. His job involved recruiting students for the university's environmental program, but Mike quickly found that he loved assisting students through the admissions and financial aid process, supporting them at the beginning of their higher education. In 2000, Mike began working in the financial aid office at Bluffton University in Ohio. He later became the Assistant Director of Financial Aid for the University of Toledo in 2004. Most recently, Mike worked again at the University of Findlay, this time in the financial aid office as Associate Director.

Since beginning his career in financial aid, Mike has been involved in the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA). He continues to increase his financial aid knowledge by participating in professional development and training opportunities including the Leadership Class, which aims to boost involvement and leadership of financial aid professionals. He lives with his wife, Kara, in Columbus, and he's anxiously looking forward to the arrival of their first son in April.

I am truly delighted to welcome Mike to the Great Lakes team! It's wonderful to have someone with so much experience and enthusiasm working with our dedicated group. It's also wonderful to expand our team and open doors for even more students to higher education and successful futures.

Until next time, have a great month!
